Self portrait, Jaisalmer India 2014

Anna Maria Antoinette D’Addario is an Italian-Australian photographic artist and writer focused on developing visual narrative using documentary and art-based practice. She is dedicated to the expression of social, environmental and humanitarian issues and the exploration of new modes of storytelling.

Over the past years she has been committed to public arts projects and to the support of practitioners in the field acting as a curator, photo editor and deputy director of the Sydney based Reportage Festival together with photographer Stephen Dupont. In 2013 and 2014 she curated and produced numerous exhibitions, events and educational workshops for Reportage, including the highly successful 4 Stories outdoor exhibition installation at Darling Quarter, featuring the work of Jodi Bieber, Tamara Dean, Raphaela Rosella and Claire Martin and the Photography In Conflict Symposium at MCA amongst others. The 2013 Reportage Festival was the most successful edition of the event to date prompting engagement and discussion in the community. Anna was fundamental in the organisation and curation of the 2013 Reportage Censored outdoor installation exhibition in Hyde Park Sydney that created a conversation with the general public about the nature of censorship and the value cultural events have for individuals in Australia. Alongside this she has contributed written content, co-edited diverse publications and continues to work as a photo editor and curator for projects and specific practitioners, collaborating with a range of documentary photographers. Anna is a founding member of the Australian collective Lumina.

Her photographic and written work has been published in various international publications such as Vogue Italia, Internazionale, The Sydney Morning Herald, Il Sole 24 Ore, Vogue UK, the Guardian, PRIVATE Magazine, Photodust, Peril Magazine and TAKE as well as in other online features. She has exhibited work in Italy and Australia to this date. Working between Europe, Asia and Oceania, Anna is engaged in long-form storytelling and is currently based in Australia whilst working on her first photobook.

Anna is a MFA Candidate at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney and also works as an educator participating in programs at various academic institutions and art based organisations.

'She’s conceptual. She’s a concept lover, and is dynamic enough to create them, to open doors, to build a soulful bridge for the momentous forms in which vulnerability can manifest itself. That’s her stage, to listen to her ghosts, her afflictions, the fear and the freedom and the shadows trapping all of us. For some… the dreams, the nightmares, the transcendent experiences. It takes one moment, when solitude and loneliness come together, when the human and the natural world are at one... that’s where she takes me. She has a romantic, beautiful and soft signature. Hand made visual poetry, while inner afflictions are radiated.'
